The Federal Government has commenced the N297 billion reconstruction of the 56.5-kilometre Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road in Oyo State, although the project launch was overshadowed by complaints from the state government over the absence of Governor Seyi Makinde from the ceremony.
President Bola Tinubu, represented by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, officially flagged off the reconstruction project.
The President also disclosed that approval had been granted for the redesign of the 70-kilometre Ibadan-Abeokuta Road, with the procurement process already underway.
Tinubu described the project as part of his administration’s major infrastructure initiatives aimed at easing the hardship faced by Nigerians and improving road connectivity across the country.
He noted that the Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode route had suffered years of neglect, assuring that the reconstruction, being executed by JRB Construction Company, would be completed within 36 months.
According to the President, the project goes beyond repairing a major highway, as it is expected to strengthen economic ties between Oyo and Ogun states.
“Today marks the flag-off of the 56.5-kilometre Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode Road. It is more than just a flag-off; it is a connection between the two states economically.
“Ibadan-Ijebu-Ode is too important for the Federal Government to neglect. The importance of this road extends beyond the boundaries of the states.”
